Social Sciences and History / Unit 5 SSH 0402 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
Reading a Historical Claim for Cause and Interpretation
The idea
The anchor's method separates a primary cause, the most immediate reason an event occurred, from contributing factors, and it names schools of interpretation the exam may ask about. The great man theory holds that leaders' deeds are enough to explain the past. Social history looks at every class and category of people. Intellectual history is the history of ideas. Progressive history reads the past as a straight line toward a more democratic destination. Revisionism alters interpretation by adding new elements and perspectives. Historical empathy sees the past on its own terms, without judgment or modern attitudes.
In practice
Given "the war began when the archduke was shot, and the alliances made it spread", the shot is the primary cause and the alliances contributing factors. Given "the age is explained by its three great kings", the great man theory. Given "history moves steadily toward liberty", progressive history. Given "a new study adds the peasants' testimony and changes the verdict", revisionism. Given "judge the pharaoh by his own world, not ours", historical empathy.
Where people slip
The trap is treating revisionism as an insult; the anchor defines it as the normal process by which interpretation improves. The second trap is confusing the primary cause with the deepest cause. The anchor's primary cause is the immediate one.
