The idea
Egypt united under pharaohs, meaning big house, in the fourth millennium BCE, holding that Ma'at, order and truth, ruled the universe. The Old Kingdom built pyramids; the Middle Kingdom expanded; the New Kingdom expelled the Hyksos and reached into Nubia, Canaan and Syria.
In practice
Intermediate periods, when nomarchs or foreigners took power.
Where people slip
The Hyksos brought better bronze, the composite bow and the chariot.
