Captions available
The idea
After the Indus cities were abandoned, the Aryans brought hereditary castes and the Vedic religion, which with karma and reincarnation became Hinduism. The Mauryas unified northern India in the fourth century BCE; the Guptas' flowering ended when the Huns invaded.
In practice
Samsara, the soul's continuance; karma, deeds shaping rebirth.
Where people slip
Berger dates the Mauryas three twenty-one to one eighty-four BCE.
