Social Sciences and History / Unit 5 SSH 0417 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Korea, Japan, and the Chinese Model
Captions available
The idea
Korea took the Chinese model: Confucian schools, a meritocratic civil service, and a capital modeled on Tang Chang'an. Japan received Buddhism through Korea in the sixth century and Confucianism and script through China, then grew its own: Shinto, the samurai, the shogun.
In practice
Seokgoram Grotto in Korea; Borobudur in Southeast Asia.
Where people slip
Geography hindered unity: disasters, porous borders, and trade's troubles.
