The Spinal Cord's Two Jobs
Captions available
The idea
The spinal cord does two jobs: it carries impulses to and from the brain, and it serves as a reflex center.
In practice
Sensory signals travel up the cord; motor signals travel down it; reflexes happen without conscious thought, which is why they are faster than deliberate actions.
Where people slip
A cord injury can cut both pathways below the damage.
