The idea
The nervous system has two divisions: the central nervous system, the brain and spinal cord, and the peripheral nervous system, the nerves that branch out from them.
In practice
Bone protects the central system: the skull around the brain, the vertebrae around the cord.
Where people slip
Peripheral nerves are the body's communication lines, so numbness in a hand can start far from the hand.
