The idea
Buffer time is time left open in the schedule for emergencies, urgent walk-ins and other unplanned needs.
In practice
Leaving a slot or two open each day, often one in the morning and one in the afternoon, keeps a single emergency from disrupting the whole day.
Where people slip
Mondays and Fridays are often the busiest days, so some practices leave extra buffer time then.
