Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 22   MAS 538 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds

Placing V One and V Two

Captions available

The idea

The first two chest electrodes sit on either side of the breastbone, in the fourth space between the ribs.

In practice

First, V one goes in the fourth intercostal space at the right edge of the sternum. Second, V two goes in the fourth intercostal space at the left edge of the sternum, directly across from V one. These two set the level for the rest, because V four is placed one space lower and V three is placed between them.

Where people slip

Placing V one and V two a space too high or too low shifts the whole chest pattern, because every other chest electrode is placed relative to them. Locate the fourth intercostal space with care before placing anything else, and recheck it if the patient has moved.
