Before drawing blood, ask the patient to state their full name, and check it against the laboratory form.
In practice
Labels need the patient's first and last name plus a second identifier, such as date of birth, matching the paperwork exactly.
Where people slip
Asking "Are you John Smith?" invites a mistaken yes. Ask the patient to say their name.
