The idea
Every specimen container is labeled with the patient's identifying information, according to the practice's policy.
In practice
Label at the time of collection, then document the date and time the specimen was collected, along with anything unusual about it.
Where people slip
An unlabeled specimen cannot be safely matched to a patient, and may have to be collected again.
