The idea
Stool specimens are collected to test for cancer, parasites or hidden blood, following the lab's specific instructions.
In practice
For a fecal occult blood test, often done at home, a thin smear goes on each square of a test card, taken from two different parts of the stool.
Where people slip
Label the card before the patient takes it home, and review the instructions with them.
