The idea
A wound culture identifies the bacteria in a wound and which antibiotics can treat them.
In practice
Irrigate the wound first, then swab the cleanest tissue, not pus or dead tissue, rotating the swab over about a one-centimeter area.
Where people slip
A swab taken from pus or debris misleads the result.
