What Makes a Test Waived
Captions available
The idea
Under federal laboratory rules, a waived test is a simple laboratory test that meets at least one of three criteria.
In practice
It is cleared for home use, or so simple and accurate that errors are unlikely, or harmless to the patient if done incorrectly.
Where people slip
Simple does not mean careless. A waived test still has to be done exactly right.
