The Administrative Duties

The idea

On the administrative side, a medical assistant keeps the practice running: phones, schedule, insurance and supplies.

In practice

Step one is the telephone: answering calls, finding out what each caller needs, and routing the call to the right person. Step two is the schedule: booking appointments so that patients are seen and the provider's time is used well. Step three is insurance: helping patients with forms, and working with the codes that turn a visit into a bill. Step four is supplies: keeping count of medical and office supplies, and ordering more before anything runs out. All four tasks also involve the record, because each call, booking and claim belongs to a patient.

Where people slip

Administrative work is not separate from patient care. A booking error delays treatment, and a coding error can bill a patient for something that never happened, so the front office needs the same care as the exam room.
