Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 15 MAS 359 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
A Simple Dressing Change
The idea
A simple dressing change follows a sequence that keeps the wound clean and the old dressing contained.
In practice
Step one: confirm the order, clean your hands, identify the patient, and gather only the supplies you need. Step two: put on gloves, remove the outer dressing and then the inner dressing, and wrap the old dressing inside your glove as you take the glove off. Step three: clean your hands, put on new gloves, and assess the wound's appearance, drainage and any odor. Step four: clean the wound as the order and policy direct, using moistened gauze, one piece per stroke. Step five: change gloves again, then apply the sterile dressing without touching the side that faces the wound. Step six: secure the dressing, clean your hands, and document.
Where people slip
Change gloves between removing the old dressing and applying the new one. The old dressing contaminates the gloves that touched it.
