Checking a Drug Reference

Captions available

The idea

Before you prepare or discuss a medication you do not know well, check a current drug reference.

In practice

Step one: find the drug by its generic name, and confirm the brand names it is sold under. Step two: confirm its class and what it is used for, so the order makes sense for this patient. Step three: read the administration information, such as route, what to avoid taking with it, and which warnings apply. Step four: note any warning that calls for a check before giving it, such as a pulse check before a drug that slows the heart. Use a reference your practice approves; the federal library's DailyMed site publishes drug labels, and the printed package insert carries the same label information.

Where people slip

Information goes out of date. A reference from several years ago may miss new warnings, so use the most recent edition your practice provides. If the reference and the order seem to conflict, stop and ask the provider before acting.
