Medical Assistant Prep / Unit 5 MAS 121 short lesson, about 20 seconds
Acid-Reducing Drugs
Captions available
The idea
Several classes treat excess stomach acid, from heartburn to ulcers.
In practice
Antacids neutralize acid that is already present; histamine-two blockers such as famotidine and proton pump inhibitors such as pantoprazole or omeprazole reduce how much acid is made.
Where people slip
Ulcers can bleed dangerously, so report black stools or vomiting blood.
