The idea
Many practices scan bar codes to check the rights electronically before a medication is given.
In practice
Scanning the patient's identification and the medication package lets the system confirm that the drug matches an order for that patient.
Where people slip
A scanner supports your checks; it does not replace them. A wrong package scanned is still wrong.
