Drill: Test Cases From a Card

Captions available

The idea

The book's drill for testers derives test cases directly from one card.

In practice

Step one: take one card the team has written. Step two: for each constraint and rule on it, write at least one positive test, one that meets the rule. Step three: for the same rule, write at least one negative test, one that breaks it. Step four: tag every test with the thing and the card's identifier. Step five: note any rule too vague to test, and send it back to the card's author with the question it raised, so the card improves before the code is written.

Where people slip

The book says this drill surfaces under-specified rules remarkably quickly. A rule that cannot be broken in a test was never precise enough to build.
