Planning a Workshop for an Agency
The idea
A worked example, constructed for this course, plans the book's one-day workshop for a transport licensing agency.
In practice
Kofi, a team lead at the agency, is asked to introduce the method to fourteen people: three analysts, two product owners, an architect, two testers, an AI engineer, two policy officers, a compliance lead and two frontline staff from the service desk. He follows the book's principles. He starts with their world: in the problem storm, the group lists a recent rule change that broke the renewal letters, and an AI summary that told a driver the wrong fee. For the map exercise, he picks a domain everyone knows, the Driver License Renewal, and the noun storm produces twenty-eight things. Clustering them, the group finds that renewal has meant both the application and the issued license. That becomes the morning's discovery. The card exercise drafts one card, creating a Renewal Decision, and merging the pairs' drafts adds two rules nobody had written down. After lunch, the same Renewal Decision gets a Silver Pack, then a mini-matrix, and Kofi presents a change: a new medical-check requirement for older drivers. The groups list eleven items to revisit. For the AI segment, Kofi uses the agency's approved tool with the Pack and no personal data. The tool's draft card adds a field for a driver's credit score, which every group catches. The day ends with two commitments: Packs for the Renewal Decision and the License within a month, and the next rule change walked through a matrix.
Where people slip
Every choice came from the book: a mixed room, the group's own pain first, one thing all day, AI only after the first four layers, approved tools and no personal data, and named commitments at the end. The day's most useful moment, renewal meaning two things, came from the map exercise, which is why the book puts it before everything else.
