Keeping an AI-Use Log

Captions available

The idea

An AI-use log records where AI drafted or revised work, which the method requires for important documents and which NIST's profile supports through additional tracking and documentation.

In practice

Step one: decide what gets logged: at least anything high-consequence, anything sent outside the team, and anything that changes a controlled document. Step two: for each entry, record the date, the tool, the task, and the output it touched. Step three: record the check that was done and who did it. Step four: record any correction or override and the reason. Step five: review the log monthly for patterns.

Where people slip

A log that is too detailed will not be kept. Start with the minimum for high-consequence work and widen it only if reviews show the need.
