Writing Your Team's AI Rules

The idea

A team's own generative AI rules turn NIST's acceptable-use guidance and the method's governance into a short document people will actually use.

In practice

Step one: list the approved tools and what each may be used for. Step two: state what may never be pasted, such as personal data, client confidential material or credentials, and where sensitive work must go instead. Step three: name the uses that are forbidden, such as final decisions about people. Step four: set the review rule, which outputs need which level of check, and the logging rule. Step five: say who owns the rules, how to ask a question, and how to report a problem.

Where people slip

Keep it short enough to read in five minutes. Rules that run to many pages are skipped, and the team falls back on habit, which is the risk the rules were meant to remove.
