Who Does What: Roles Across the Lifecycle
The idea
NIST's framework describes the many AI actors involved across a system's lifecycle, and naming them helps any organization see who is responsible for what, including outside partners.
In practice
Step one: find the designers and developers who build or adapt the model and its application. Step two: find the deployment actors, which NIST says include system integrators, who pilot the system, check compatibility with existing systems, ensure regulatory compliance, manage organizational change and evaluate the user experience. Step three: find the operators and monitors, the testers and evaluators, and the domain experts. Step four: find the procurement staff, the third-party providers, and the governance and oversight bodies. Step five: remember the end users and the affected communities, who are actors too.
Where people slip
In contracted work, several of these roles sit with a vendor or integrator. The course page carries a reference table that maps each NIST role to the systems-integration terms used in contracts.
