When to Escalate

Captions available

The idea

Escalation moves an AI-assisted decision to someone with more authority or expertise, and it needs clear triggers decided in advance.

In practice

Step one: escalate when a check finds an error that you cannot resolve from the source material. Step two: escalate when the output touches a high-consequence area and you are not the named decision-maker. Step three: escalate when sources disagree and the disagreement affects the final outcome. Step four: escalate when the AI's output conflicts with your own professional judgment, and say so plainly. Step five: record the escalation, who took it, what was decided, and why.

Where people slip

The fourth trigger is the one people skip, because overruling a confident tool feels presumptuous. Unit two's automation bias is exactly that feeling.
