Checking Numbers
The idea
Numbers in generated text deserve their own pass, because a model can produce a plausible figure as fluently as a correct one.
In practice
Step one: find every number in the output, including dates, amounts, percentages and counts. Step two: trace each one to its source document and confirm it matches exactly, including the units. Step three: recompute anything the model calculated, such as a total, an average or a percentage change, yourself. Step four: check that each number is attached to the right thing, since a correct figure in the wrong row is still wrong.
Where people slip
Rounding, unit changes and swapped figures are the common slips. A total that does not match its parts is the quickest signal that something upstream is wrong.
