The idea
Motor development runs cephalocaudally, from the head downward, and proximodistally, from the center of the body outward.
In practice
A baby controls the head before sitting, and reaches with the arm before using a pincer grasp.
Where people slip
Gross motor skills use large muscles, as in running; fine motor skills use the hands and fingers, as in writing.
