Neurons and Pruning
Captions available
The idea
The brain holds about eighty-six billion neurons, which connect at synapses; early childhood produces far more connections than are kept, and unused ones are pruned.
In practice
Connections a child uses often grow stronger; those left unused are eliminated.
Where people slip
Pruning is refinement rather than loss: experience decides which connections survive.
