The idea
In MLA, titles of whole works are italicized and titles of shorter works within them are put in quotation marks.
In practice
Books, journals, films and websites are italicized; articles, chapters, poems and web pages go in quotation marks. Important words in titles are capitalized.
Where people slip
The rule follows the container: if a work contains other works, its title is italicized.
