The idea
In MLA, quotations of four typed lines or fewer run in the text in quotation marks; longer ones are set off as indented blocks.
In practice
In a block quotation, there are no quotation marks, and the citation follows the final period rather than preceding it.
Where people slip
Introduce block quotations with a full sentence, usually ending in a colon.
