College Composition / Unit 25 CMP 0613 worked example, 60 to 90 seconds
An Article Entry
The idea
An MLA journal-article entry names the article, then its container, the journal, with its volume, issue, date and pages.
In practice
Build it in order. First, the author, last name first, and a period. Second, the article title in quotation marks, ending with a period inside the closing mark. Third, the journal title in italics, followed by a comma. Fourth, the volume, abbreviated v o l, and the issue, abbreviated n o, separated by commas. Fifth, the date of publication, followed by a comma. Sixth, the page range, preceded by p p, followed by a period. If you read the article in a database, add the database's name in italics as a second container, then its DOI or web address.
Where people slip
The article title goes in quotation marks and the journal title in italics; reversing them, or italicizing both, is one of the commonest MLA errors.
