The idea
Beyond sequence, transitions can show time, such as meanwhile, currently and eventually, or space, such as nearby, in the background and to the left.
In practice
Spatial transitions help in descriptions, such as of an image; time transitions help in narratives and histories.
Where people slip
Mixing time and spatial signals in one passage can blur whether the writer is moving through time or through a scene.
