Transitions Between Paragraphs
Captions available
The idea
A transition at the start of a paragraph tells readers how the new paragraph relates to the last and where the argument is going.
In practice
In the anchor's example, four reasons for a traffic signal gain first, second, another reason and finally, so readers can track them.
Where people slip
Between paragraphs, the first sentence carries most of the transition.
