College Composition / Unit 2   CMP 0031 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Independent Clauses

Captions available

The idea

An independent clause, also called a main clause, has a subject and a predicate and can stand alone as a sentence.

In practice

"The bus was late" is an independent clause; it makes complete sense by itself.

Where people slip

Two independent clauses cannot be joined by a comma alone; that error, the comma splice, is covered in unit three.
