The idea
A simple sentence has one independent clause and expresses one main idea.
In practice
It can be short, "The plan failed," or long, "After months of careful planning by the committee, the plan failed in its first week," because phrases do not add clauses.
Where people slip
Simple describes structure, not length or difficulty.
