Coordinating Conjunctions
Captions available
The idea
The seven coordinating conjunctions are for, and, nor, but, or, yet and so, remembered as fanboys.
In practice
They join words, phrases or clauses of equal importance; with a comma before them, they join two independent clauses.
Where people slip
Starting a sentence with and or but is acceptable in many genres, but some instructors prefer to avoid it in formal papers.
