The idea
Many sentences follow the pattern subject, verb, object: someone does something to something.
In practice
In "The student revised the essay," the essay receives the action, so it is the object; in "The essay seemed stronger," stronger completes the subject instead.
Where people slip
Readers follow the subject-verb-object pattern most easily, so burying it slows them down.
