Contrasts and Shifts at the End
Captions available
The idea
Use a comma to set off a contrasting element or a distinct shift at the end of a sentence.
In practice
"I am brave, not reckless"; "You are coming to the meeting, aren't you?" The comma signals that the sentence turns.
Where people slip
Without the comma, the contrast can blur into the main clause.
