The idea
Several other comma placements are errors: after the last item in a series, between compound objects, and before an indirect quotation.
In practice
"Guests enjoyed the music, and the dancing" and "Reviews say, that the band is the best" both carry needless commas.
Where people slip
When unsure, ask which rule calls for the comma; if none does, leave it out.
