The idea
Do not put a comma before a conjunction that joins two verbs sharing one subject.
In practice
"The band stopped after two hours, and took a break" needs no comma, because took has no subject of its own.
Where people slip
Ask whether the words after and could stand alone; if not, leave the comma out.
