Mitosis, also called karyokinesis, is nuclear division: a process, run in five named stages, that separates a cell's replicated chromosomes into two identical new nuclei.

Mitosis proceeds through prophase, prometaphase, metaphase, anaphase, and telophase, in fixed order, whenever a eukaryotic cell divides its nucleus.
