The idea
Glycolysis splits one six-carbon glucose molecule into two three-carbon pyruvate molecules in the cytoplasm, netting two ATP and two NADH without oxygen.
In practice
Nearly every living cell, aerobic or not, runs glycolysis as its first step in extracting energy from glucose.
Where people slip
Glycolysis needs no oxygen and is not "anaerobic respiration" — it is the pathway every cell runs before oxygen becomes relevant.
