The idea
Fungal phyla are classified by reproductive structure, much like prokaryote species delimitation by rRNA-gene similarity, rather than a species count.
In practice
Ascomycota produces spores in a sac called an ascus; Basidiomycota instead produces spores on a club-shaped basidium.

Sequencing continues to revise which species belong to which fungal phylum — this course teaches the criterion, not a frozen placement.
