The idea
Fungal sexual reproduction proceeds through three stages: plasmogamy fuses two haploid cells' cytoplasm, karyogamy fuses their nuclei, meiosis restores the haploid state.
In practice
Between plasmogamy and karyogamy, many fungi pass through a dikaryotic stage, where two haploid nuclei coexist briefly in one cell.
Where people slip
Plasmogamy and karyogamy are separate steps — cytoplasmic fusion does not mean the nuclei have fused as well.
