The idea
Ascomycota, the sac fungi, form haploid ascospores inside a sac-shaped ascus, and make up the majority of described fungal species.
In practice
Baker's yeast, truffles, and morels are all Ascomycota, alongside Penicillium, the mold genus that yields the antibiotic penicillin.
Where people slip
Many Ascomycota reproduce asexually far more often than sexually— the defining ascus appears only during their rare sexual phase.
