The idea
Basidiomycota, the club fungi, form haploid basidiospores on a club-shaped basidium, and include most mushrooms, shelf fungi, smuts, and rusts.
In practice
A mushroom's gills are compacted hyphae bearing basidia on their surface, the structure the whole mushroom exists mainly to produce.
Where people slip
Most edible mushrooms are Basidiomycota, but so are several of the deadliest poisonous species— phylum membership predicts neither edibility nor safety.
