The idea
A mycorrhiza is a mutualistic association between fungal hyphae and plant roots, trading fungal minerals for the plant's photosynthetic sugars.
In practice
Ectomycorrhizae sheathe roots with a hyphal mantle, while endomycorrhizae, formed by Glomeromycota, grow branched structures inside root cells.
Where people slip
Most vascular plants depend on a mycorrhizal partner for normal growth — this mutualism is closer to the rule than the exception.
