The idea
Septate hyphae divide into cells by perforated cross-walls called septa; coenocytic hyphae lack septa, forming one large cell with many nuclei.
In practice
Bread mold hyphae, in Zygomycota, are coenocytic, while most other fungal phyla divide their hyphae with perforated septa.
Where people slip
Perforated septa let molecules stream between cells — a septate hypha is divided, but not sealed, cell to cell.
