ACT Preparation / Unit 9   ACT 0809 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Slope

Captions available

The idea

The slope of a line is rise over run: m = (y₂ − y₁)/(x₂ − x₁). It is the rate of change of y per unit of x, in units of y per x.

In practice

Through (1, 3) and (4, 9): m = 6/3 = 2.

Where people slip

Subtract in the same order, top and bottom. Positive slope rises left to right; negative slope falls.
