ACT Preparation / Unit 9   ACT 0810 short lesson, about 20 seconds

Slope-Intercept Form

Captions available

The idea

In slope-intercept form, y = mx + b, m is the slope and b the y-intercept, the value of y at x = 0.

In practice

y = −3x + 5 crosses the y-axis at 5 and falls 3 for each step right.

Where people slip

Solve for y first: 4x + 2y = 6 becomes y = −2x + 3, slope −2.
