The idea
A scatter plot shows paired data as points. If y tends to rise as x rises, the association is positive; if y tends to fall, negative; with no pattern, none.
In practice
In an invented class data set, points rising from lower left to upper right show a positive association.
Where people slip
An association describes a tendency; individual points can go the other way.
